Moving every month by plane gets tiring. By train, the journey becomes part of the stay: you work on the way, arrive in the centre, and see the landscape change. These seven cities make a loose route across the continent, each worth a few weeks.

No. 01
Spain
Europe
Beach, boulevards and Gaudí at every corner.
The start or end of the high-speed line to France, with sea and mountains in one city.

No. 02
France
Europe
France's most Mediterranean city - chaotic, sunburnt, refusing to be Paris.
A few hours from Paris by fast train, with calanques and a big, scruffy port city.
No. 03
Italy
Europe
Italy's design and fashion capital - colder, more efficient, wildly more expensive than the south.
Italy's rail hub, where the lines to Switzerland, Venice and Rome meet.
No. 04
Switzerland
Europe
Absurdly expensive, absurdly clean - a lake in the middle of the city you can swim across in July.
Expensive, but the most beautiful train rides in Europe start here.
No. 05
Austria
Europe
Consistently ranked the most livable city on earth - museums, wine gardens, trams that run on time.
Night trains in every direction and the best café culture for working.
No. 06
Czech Republic
Europe
Central Europe's prettiest capital and still - despite the tourists - genuinely affordable.
An easy ride from Vienna and Berlin, with a lower monthly cost than either.
No. 07
Hungary
Europe
Thermal baths, ruin bars, the widest river in Europe running straight through the middle of the city.
The end of the line: thermal baths, the Danube and affordable rent.
Before you go
Book long-distance trains as early as you can; prices on high-speed routes rise sharply in the final weeks, much like flights. Many European operators open sales two to six months ahead. Rail passes can be worth it if you move often, but for one move a month, individual tickets are usually cheaper. Night trains from Vienna are the most comfortable way to cover long distances and save a night's accommodation.
The gap between check-out and an evening train is the awkward part of slow travel. Radical Storage lets you store luggage near most main stations for a few euros. For the odd leg where there's no good train, Kiwi.com combines trains, buses and flights in one search.
Roaming within the EU is free with an EU SIM, but Switzerland is outside the rules and can be expensive. One eSIM from Drimsim or Saily covers every country on this route. In the bigger cities, a Go City pass can be worth it if you plan to visit several museums in a few days.
